Oculus Quest 2 update introduces 90Hz support and built-in fitness tracker

Oculus has pushed out the first big update for the Oculus Quest 2 headset, bringing a slew of impressive new features to the headset after its launch last month.

Oculus has announced a major software upgrade for the Quest 2 is now live, and the patch has enabled Home, Guardian and Passthrough to run at 90Hz on the headset by default.

This update means that game developers will be able to ship 90Hz titles, a step up from the previous default of 72Hz. Superhot, Echo VR, Beat Saber, Vacation Simulator, Job Simulator, Racket: Nx, and Space Pirate Trainer will all soon be updated to support the higher refresh rate.

If you’re using the headset via the Oculus app on PC, you will be able to toggle your games between 72Hz, 80Hz, or 90Hz – and the company promises that visual quality has been improved for anyone using the Link function, too.

On top of that, we’re also expecting Oculus Move, an in-built fitness tracking app, to appear on the Quest and Quest 2 headsets this week.

The app will gather various fitness statistics from you as you play, giving you data on how many calories you’ve burned and minutes spent being physically active in games that you play. Ideal as lockdowns continue around the world in the face of Covid-19, then.

Last but not least, the company has introduced App Gifting which is set to arrive on the headsets later this month.

“Later this month we’ll be rolling out App Gifting, letting you purchase games or experiences through the Oculus Store (via a browser or the mobile app) and send them to a friend,” Oculus says in a press release.

“Just look for the “Buy for a Friend” button on the website or tap the “⋮” menu on the mobile app, and make sure you have their email address handy. And if you’re lucky enough to receive a gift, you can redeem via your browser or the mobile app as well.”
